Distinguishing Fearful and Feral Cats in Shelters- And What to do Once We’ve Identified Them
Ensuring adequate emotional welfare of cats in a shelter setting is dependent on identifying their prior level of socialization. The first step is to accurately identify and differentiate these cats (fearful versus feral) even when they all shows many signs of fear. And once we do this, we can then take steps to decrease their emotional distress in ways that are tailored to that cat’s emotional and social needs. This lecture would discuss appropriate outcome options, lengths of stay, housing arrangements, as well as enrichment and basic behavior modification as appropriate, to try to minimize emotional distress as much as possible for these two groups of cats while in the sheltering organization’s care.
